The Division of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has opened a second sluice gate on the Vaal Dam to handle rising water ranges because of the steady rainfall.
This follows the opening of the primary sluice gate final weekend, as reported by The South African web site.
The opening of one other sluice gate on Friday elevated the outflow to roughly 240 cubic metres per second (mᵌ/s).
The division stated that each one six valves that have been opened on Monday, have been closed.
Protected operational limits
“The dam is presently sitting at 106.52% and the elevated outflows search to maintain the dam at 105%. The present water launch by the 2 sluice gates continues to be inside the secure operational limits and isn’t anticipated to result in overtopping of riverbanks downstream.
“At Bloemhof Dam, ranges are presently at 96.10% and the outflow of 400 mᵌ/s will stay unchanged to permit for the additional flows which are anticipated from Vaal Dam, and to maintain water ranges on the dam beneath 100.0%,” the division stated in a press release.
