Luigi Mangione has been charged with killing UnitedHealthcare’s Brian Thompson in New York
The US Division of Justice has requested for the dying penalty for Luigi Mangione, who was charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“Luigi Mangione’s homicide of Brian Thompson – an harmless man and father of two younger youngsters – was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” Legal professional Common Pam Bondi mentioned in a press release on Tuesday.
“After cautious consideration, I’ve directed federal prosecutors to hunt the dying penalty on this case as we feature out President Trump’s agenda to cease violent crime and Make America Protected Once more,” she added.
In response to the prosecution, Mangione stalked Thompson and finally shot him on a Manhattan road on December 4, 2024. “The homicide was an act of political violence,” Bondi mentioned.
Police arrested Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9 after an intense manhunt.
Mangione reportedly wrote a brief manifesto expressing his frustration with the US healthcare system. “Frankly, these parasites merely had it coming … They proceed to abuse our nation for immense revenue as a result of the American public has allowed them to get away with it,” he wrote, in response to journalist Ken Klippenstein.
In January, President Donald Trump directed the Division of Justice to pursue the dying penalty “for all crimes of a severity demanding its use.”
“Capital punishment is a necessary instrument for deterring and punishing those that would commit probably the most heinous crimes and acts of deadly violence in opposition to Americans,” the president wrote in an government order.
