Lufthansa Supports Industry-Wide Shift to Collaborative NDC Standards

Lufthansa Group is redefining its relationship with South African travel agents as it transitions towards the New Distribution Capability (NDC). The airline emphasizes a spirit of collaboration rather than a coercive approach to this pivotal change.

This shift is significant for both the airline and travel agents, marking a new era in how services and ticketing are handled in the aviation space. Understanding NDC’s implications is crucial for anyone involved in travel, from agents to consumers, as it could reshape the entire landscape of air travel in South Africa.

    What happened

In a recent conversation with Travel News, René Koinzack, Lufthansa Group’s Senior Director for North, East & Southern Africa, affirmed the airline’s commitment to working alongside travel agents throughout this transition. He highlighted the vital role these agents play in the company’s distribution strategy, stating, “We strongly believe NDC is the future and we see it already working in many markets.”

Koinzack pointed out that currently, over 80% of Lufthansa’s tickets are sold through NDC-compliant channels and the airline’s own websites. With a clear vision for South Africa, he sees substantial potential for NDC’s success as the industry evolves.

Transitioning from the traditional Global Distribution Systems (GDS) to NDC is not without its challenges. Acknowledging this, Lufthansa is embarking on a series of initiatives aimed at easing the switch for travel agents. Continued enhancements in NDC servicing, comprehensive training programs, and increased support through dedicated account managers are all part of the strategy to facilitate smooth adaptation.

    Why it matters

NDC represents a fundamental shift in airline distribution, changing how tickets and services are marketed and sold. For travel agents, adapting to this new capability means they can provide more personalized services to clients, offering tailored travel options that previous systems may not allow.

Moreover, with Lufthansa’s commitment to not mandating a complete move away from traditional EDIFACT booking methods, the transition becomes less intimidating. Agents can choose how they prefer to operate, allowing for a gradual adaptation that respects existing workflows while exploring innovative opportunities.

    The bigger picture

This development coincides with a broader trend in the travel industry, where automating and modernizing processes is becoming essential for staying competitive. As more airlines adopt NDC, the ripple effect on travel agents and customers will be expansive, fostering a marketplace that is not only efficient but also caters to evolving consumer demands.

For South Africa, where the travel landscape has recovered post-pandemic, embracing NDC could be advantageous. The potential for streamlined operations and enhanced customer experiences means that those who adapt quickly will likely reap the rewards in an increasingly digital age.

    Key takeaways

    • Lufthansa aims for a collaborative transition to NDC, promoting partnership with travel agents.
    • More than 80% of Lufthansa tickets are already sold via NDC channels.
    • Training and support for travel agents are a priority for facilitating the transition.
    • EDIFACT will remain available to agents, ensuring a flexible approach to distribution.
    • The industry is evolving, making it vital for agents to adapt to maintain competitiveness.

As Lufthansa marks its commitment to working alongside local agents, the South African travel industry stands on the brink of transformation. With collaborative support, the transition to NDC promises to enhance not just airline efficiency but the overall travel experience. Those who embrace these changes may find themselves ahead in a fast-evolving landscape.
